25th August - Water Heritage Day
Monday 25th August 2025
Today is Water Heritage Day, supported by Local Authority Waters Programme!
We are lucky to live in a stunning county with upland lakes and a magnificent mountain range - much of which is protected by international nature conservation designations, and forms the Wicklow Mountains National Park.
Other areas are privately owned and access is provided by the goodwill of landowners. We are working with landowners, Wicklow Uplands Council, An Óige - The Irish Youth Hostel Association, and Wicklow County Council, on our climate action plan to restore native trees along some of our headwaters. This work began with the SUAS EIP Project, and has continued through the NPWS’s work with volunteers from Mountaineering Ireland and Rewild Wicklow.
Great to see these trees have established well and are protected from browsing by non-native Sika deer.
