Tree Planting on the Avonbeg River

A day of great energy, enthusiasm and most importantly of all - Climate Action!

What a day! The beautiful Glenmalure Valley was buzzing with activity on Saturday, January 10th, as volunteers met to take part in a vital tree planting initiative along the banks of the Avonbeg River. This dedicated effort saw collaboration between East Wicklow Rivers Trust, Wicklow Uplands Council, ReWild Wicklow and An Óige - The Irish Youth Hostel Association .

This impactful work is part of our Upland Gully Woodland Restoration project and is generously supported and funded through the Community Climate Action Fund, thanks to the contributions and support of Wicklow County Council and Community Foundation Ireland.

The event was marked by the successful planting of over 1000 native trees of certified Irish provenance. Project ecologist Faith Wilson and project forester Paddy Purser shared their expertise, ensuring that the principle of "the right tree in the right place" was upheld. Species planted included Sessile Oak, Downy Birch, Scots Pine, and Mountain Ash (Rowan), with plans to introduce Hazel in a future phase. Volunteers also ensured the longevity of the young trees by constructing protective tree cages and planting within established deer exclosures.

The atmosphere was full of energy and dedication, resulting in a truly effective day for environmental stewardship. This initiative clearly demonstrates the significant impact achievable when local communities unite to tackle pressing global challenges, setting a positive example for future climate action efforts.
